Roche Honors 100 Employees Nationwide for Exemplary Community Service as Part of its U.S. Centennial Celebration

PR Newswire
July 22, 2005

NUTLEY, N.J., July 22, 2005 /PRNewswire/ -- On its 100th year anniversary in the U.S., Roche is proud to announce today that 100 of its employees nationwide are being recognized for their dedication to giv ing back to the community. Through outstanding volunteer efforts, these employees have earned the company's first-ever First 100 Volunteers Community Service Award and the opportunity to direct a $100 donation from Roche to a local charity of their choice. Almost half of the award recipients are employed by the Roche Nutley, N.J. site, the company's U.S. Pharmaceuticals headquarters, while others honored are based at Roche sites across the country.

"In true Roche spirit our employees have demonstrated great dedication to philanthropy and the importance of giving back to the community," said George Abercrombie, president and CEO, Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. "We're proud to recognize these winners, reward them for their hard work and continue to support their efforts with a donation to the charity of their choice."

Volunteer efforts among Nutley employees range from mentoring minority and disadvantaged students to helping raise funds for senior housing. Volunteers also give their time to counsel victims of domestic abuse and provide emergency medical care.

"I'm honored to be recognized, but what I appreciate most from Roche is the flexibility and support to be able to contribute to my community," said award recipient Kathleen McGlory, training and education manager in the Pharmaceutical Development and Medical Science Management Department, and an employee at Roche for 39 years. Through the Parsippany Crisis Response Team, McGlory educates victims of domestic violence about options and the resources available to them. She also volunteers as a recreation counselor for children at the Jersey Battered Women's Shelter. "When I'm meeting with these victims, I am most proud of helping them take the first step and offering them hope and help to understand their options."

Further, through such Roche employee programs as Dinners-to-Go, McGlory says she is able to balance her volunteer work with family responsibilities by bringing home a ready-made dinner she orders from the company cafeteria.

National United Way Salutes 100 Volunteers Program

Though volunteering for a nationally affiliated charity was not required, many Roche employees also choose to support the United Way.

"The United Way of America salutes each one of Roche's First 100 Volunteer award winners who clearly understand the value of giving back to their communities," said Brian Gallagher, President and CEO of United Way of America. "Further, we appreciate the efforts of United Way partner companies like Roche who recognize and encourage their employees' volunteer efforts and we extend our warm congratulations to Roche in celebration of its 100th year of service in the U.S."

Roche Celebrates its Centennial

The First 100 Volunteers Community Service Award program is one of several activities planned to celebrate Roche's 100th anniversary in the United States. The program highlights Roche's longstanding commitment to corporate citizenship, which it pursues through a multifaceted process of community involvement, charitable contributions, collaborations and partnerships. As one of the first companies in the U.S. to initiate a Corporate Giving Program, Roche believes social responsibility is a key strategic component of exemplary business practice. All full-time and part-time regular employees at all Roche U.S. sites were invited to apply for the award.
